In 2008 the Research Group on Higher Education started to carry out surveys online as well within the range of the student survey. There have been two reasons for this:
- There is a need of actual data about the situation of students at present because of the constant change at universities.
- Development and construction of the European Higher Education Area allows direct comparisons between countries using online surveys.
In order to be useful for surveys online the questionnaire has to be rather short. Therefore modules have been build, using the student survey as a basis. The modules provide information about a range of important topics concerning situation and social orientation of students.
The online surveys are being carried out together with HIS within the frame of the HISBUS Panel. The data are being analysed by the Research Group on Higher Education. Online surveys as an addition to the student survey are planed to take place every one-and-a-half year.
The first online survey was done in February 2008. The topic was “Internationalisation and European Area of Higher Education”, and 16 questions were put, together having 118 items. Additionally 38 items of basic data were recorded. Students of the HISBUS Panel and the Convenience Panel of HIS were integrated into the survey. The random sample had 19,398 students; 9,009 of them coming from 269 universities took part (46,4 % response rate).
The results of the first online survey have been published as a volume containing tables. Furthermore the data have been used for various talks and publications.
The second special online-survey took place in March 2010, with the topic “politic and society engagement”. The questionnaire consisted of 18 questions and 108 items, additionally with 24 social items. Nearly 10.500 students have answered the questions.
The results have been published in 2011 with the topic: "Social values and political orientations of students".
