Nonlinear response to probe vitrification

PhD Position in theoretical physics at Universität Konstanz

At the Universität Konstanz, one PhD position is to be filled in the soft-condensed matter theory group.

We are looking for motivated candidates with interest in novel areas of nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics, specifically the nonlinear rheology of dense liquids.

We aim towards the development of a first-principles approach for the dynamics of dense, glass-forming liquids in external fields. Specifically the effect of external forces on the internal dynamics is studied, both numerically and analytically. In parallel, molecular-dynamics computer simulations are used to provide tests for the theoretical approaches. Open questions concern the transfer of previously developed methods applied for colloidal dispersions, and the development of inhomogeneous strain response under applied external forces/stresses. Besides performing theoretical development, the PhD candidate is expected to test her/his results directly by comparing to experimental results in close collaboration with projects P1 and P2 of the research unit.

The successful candidate will hold a Masters/Diploma degree in physics or a related science, and have first experience with computer simulation and/or numerical methods in physics and excellent knowledge in statistical physics. He/she should be highly motivated and is expected to participate in teaching undergraduate students to the usual extent.

Women and minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. The University of Konstanz is an equal opportunity employer. Please send your application to one of the addresses below (mail or email), preferrably until October 1, 2010.
