The qualification concept is the heart of the RTG and designed to give the participating students a clear competitive advantage in later professional environments. It has been developed on the basis of over 20 years of experience in Konstanz with RTGs in the biomedical field and with a link to industry (e.g., the present speaker participated 20 years ago in the first RTG pilot model “Biochemical pharmacology”, which was run at that time by the founding speaker of the present RTG 1331 (A. Wendel)).

Scientifically, students should be given a broad basis from more than one discipline to enable them to draw conclusions across fields, to get involved in new fields and have a sound judgement on complex problems. The basic concepts will be taught in lectures, while specific examples will be taught in seminars and symposia.This basis should allow students to understand disease symptoms on the basis of molecular events in cells and the altered interactions between cells. Students should learn to associate the knowledge of a particular molecular mechanisms with an overall disease process, to transform this understanding into ideas for developments of interventions and to develop the necessary strategies for this. This knowledge will be important for both academic and non-academic careers.

The strenght of the RTG and its novelty is the combination of following features:

  1. Close collaboration of university with pharaceutical industry, concerning both scientific projects and insight into working concepts and approaches to projects
  2. Strong focus on a pharmacological-toxicological knowledge base
  3. Expertise in the stringent validation of cellular model systems
  4. A relatively comprehensive and time-consuming basic education program in various bio-molecular disciplines and biomedical applications
  5. A culture of intensive discussion and exchange, strongly involving the students, but also PIs from very different disciplines
